Violence Against Letter Carriers Is on the Rise. We Need Real Protection—Now!
Across the country, rural letter carriers are being attacked while simply doing their jobs. Since 2020, there have been more than 2,000 reported crimes against postal workers including assaults, robberies, and the theft of arrow keys used to access mailboxes.
These attacks don’t just threaten our safety—they put entire communities at risk.
The Protect Our Letter Carriers Act (H.R. 1065) is a bipartisan bill that would provide the security upgrades and legal tools needed to keep carriers safe and hold criminals accountable.
Upgrade outdated equipment with high-security collection boxes and electronic locks
Provide funding to replace stolen or compromised arrow keys with modern systems
Require every U.S. Attorney’s Office to designate a prosecutor to handle crimes against postal workers
Strengthen penalties for assaulting or robbing postal employees
Crack down on the fraudulent use of stolen mail
These crimes are increasing in frequency and severity.
Rural carriers are often alone, on isolated routes, without protection.
Stolen arrow keys and mail endanger millions of customers.
No one should fear for their life while serving the public.
The NRLCA is fighting to pass the POLC Act—but we need every carrier’s voice. Call your legislators today and tell them to support the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act (H.R. 1065). Congressional Hotline: 202-224-3121.
