Congress is considering a dangerous proposal that would dismantle key parts of our retirement system. These cuts wouldn’t just affect future hires—they would impact today’s workforce, including those who have spent decades serving their communities.
We didn’t enter this work to get rich. We do it to serve our country and keep it running. In return, we were promised stability and a secure retirement. Changing the rules mid-career isn’t just unfair, it's a broken promise. And by forcing us to pay more while reducing what we’ll receive, these proposals amount to nothing less than a pay cut.
We must speak out to protect what we've earned.
Here’s how Congress wants to cut our benefits and what it would cost us.
Higher Retirement Contributions
Raises FERS contributions to 4.4%, cutting take-home pay. For someone earning $60,000, that’s a $2,000 pay cut every year.
Elimination of the FERS Annuity Supplement
This critical benefit helps early retirees bridge the gap before Social Security. Without it, many of us will be forced to work years longer—or retire into hardship.
Reduced Pension Value for Life
Changes the pension calculation from your highest-3 years of pay to your highest-5—slashing the value of your annuity for the rest of your life.
These changes don’t just affect numbers on paper—they hurt real people. Rural letter carriers have spent decades delivering vital prescriptions, election ballots, paychecks, and peace of mind to communities across America. We've sacrificed holidays, worked in extreme weather, and supported families who depend on us. Many of us have devoted our lives to this work because we believe in serving our communities—and the lives we’ve touched have made that service deeply rewarding. We've kept our promise to the American people. Now Congress is trying to move the goalposts mid-career and walk away from the promise they made to us.
Congress is moving fast to try to pass these cuts.
The House vote is expected by Memorial Day – May 26, 2025
The Senate is expected to vote in July
We have a narrow window to fight back. If we don’t speak out now, these cuts could become law and generations of postal workers will pay the price.
